“Around Monterey Bay” DVD Clips and Commentary
First “Around Monterey Bay” concept clip
Work on “Around Monterey Bay” has been going slowly but steadily during the 2007 holiday season. In some ways the Monterey Bay is a more difficult subject than Santa Cruz Island. The bay is not generally regarded as a cruising venue, but for the capable and adventureous sailor, it has a great deal to offer from the standpoint of natural beauty, wildlife, and open-water sailing. My biggest problem is sorting out the storyline. Is it a sailing/travelogue DVD or a travelogue/sailing DVD? This clip is my first try at weaving some of the footage into an interesting product. If you have any ideas about where the emphasis should lie, let me know!

It seems that every year around late September or early October there comes a perfect evening in Santa Cruz, California. It’s Indian summer. A balmy breeze blows along the shoreline. The full moon rises with the setting sun. Locals beat a path to the sea and in a bacchanal display of raw pleasure, revel in the perfect moment.
“Around Monterey Bay”is a DVD travelogue/cruising-guide featuring single-handed sailing, Monterey Bay natural history, and destination ports. Ports-of-call include Santa Cruz, Cowell’s Cove, Capitola Anchorage, Moss Landing Harbor and Elkhorn Slough, Monterey, and Still Water Cove, Carmel.
Coming in early spring of 2008!

Capt. Marc, veteran of multiple ocean crossings, and instructional pro, invites you to join him for lessons and/or excursions under sail. By special arrangement only.

Mark,
The rough cut looks great. It’ll be interesting to see which sailing specific components you will be able to use. You’ve got some great shots of this area.
The silouhette of the woman dancing to the drums adds to the girl power theme, I love it :-)

Marc,
The trailer for “Around Monterey Bay” looks enticing. Like the quick edits, but most especially, the look on your face in the bathroom mirror! Looks like the video will be a fun mix of sailing and learning in the tradition of Marc Hersch videos. That’s your storyline: sailing is fun, but you gotta know what you’re doing so can stay out of trouble and enjoy the moment. Keep that tension going throughout the show and you will have a winner!
[...] currently fully involved in editing the Around Monterey Bay video on my new Mac system. It’s coming together nicely, but as is always true of these [...]
Marc, if it’s 1/2 or even 1/4 as good as Around Santa Cruz Island you will have another winner on your hands!
Almost 3 years ago now my wife and I bought our Pearson 365 Ketch “Jenny La Ver” (now THIRD DAY) in Santa Cruz and have been getting her ready for a multi-year cruise with our two kids ages 10 and 11. Our plans our to Cruise down through Central America and through the Canal, to the US East Coast. Along the way we plan to film our experiences for DVD release, so your productions are a great resource in a quality production!
All the best to you and your crew.
